The furnace was shut down the morning of May 12th and was cooled enough to start tearing it down the morning of May 17th. It was still warm but not unbearable. These are some pictures of the floor and the eye of the furnace. The floor was badly cracked and the eye had a lot of glass in it. There are also pictures that show that the frame had broken as well. The frame goes all the way around the furnace, each section weighs close to 200 pounds per piece (and there are 12 that go around the top of the furnace). These pieces hold the crown in place when it expands from the heat. Replacement of the bands was not in the original plan, but when we tore into the furnace and found these broken pieces (and some completely burnt up pieces), we had to replace them. |
